Dyslexia Awareness Week Training for Managers: How To Win Over Bob

Every year, organisations book their Dyslexia Awareness Week training. But are they going to win over Bob?

To me, Bob is the classic sceptical manager we need to win round in Dyslexia Awareness Week training. He is sat at the back, arms folded, thinking to himself this is a tick-boxing exercise, maybe even "this didn't exist in my day."

My Dyslexia Awareness Week Training For Managers:

My job in a neurodiversity training is to win round Bob.

How I think we can do this is by helping him realise it isn't diversity training it is just good management. Making the strategies so simple and practical that it is a no-brainer

Keep it simple:  Often sceptical managers can be really busy and just want help getting the work done. If we put too many hoops or complex processes in place we are putting friction in place and stopping change from happening.

Skip the finger-wagging: Often the years of frustration of struggling with neurodiversity can mean a lot of trainings can come across as finger wagging. Instead we need to appreciate a lot of this conversation is new for the workplace and make it feel easy to understand.

Take the pressure off Bob: Advice in workplaces is focused on managers, but individuals are working hard without support. If in our trainings we can show how individuals can help themselves too it can help change minds.

Dyslexia in Adults was created to help people stop struggling in silence and finally get the understanding and support I could never find myself. If you are ready to take the next step.

Here are a few ways to start:

Read the book. My book Dyslexia Unlocked, published by Bloomsbury, explores all of this in much more detail, and is a good place to begin making sense of your own dyslexic mind.

Grab the free HR resource. Our free Dyslexia at Work Handbook gives HR teams and managers clear and practical steps for high-impact support.

Workplace training. If you would like more personal, tailored support, coaching works through exactly these challenges with you. You can find more details here.
