We do a lot of research here at Dyslexia in Adults! When we say lots, we mean like don't look at our google search history because it is embarrassing. There are a lot of common trends we see when researching dyslexia and other neu-diversity, and today we wanted to talk about ONE thing that drives us nuts.
The first one is that specific jobs are better for people with dyslexia than others. Before we go any further: You can do and be anything you want. You can work in any career, and nothing is off-limits to dyslexics. If anything, we have MORE options for jobs than most.
So, why can we do any job we want? Because dyslexics have a natural curiosity that has no limit. As dyslexics, we have access to a completely different way of thinking that is an asset in any field or career. That unique way of thinking, combined with years of hard work and struggling through school, makes us uniquely qualified to do anything. Let's break this down a little bit more (I know you're not convinced).
What makes dyslexics able to do any job:
We Think Differently:
Our brains naturally process information; differently; this means we look at any job in a way others don't. Any job could benefit from our unique perspective and approach to problems, projects, and task completion.
We Work HARD:
If you are like us, you have deep scars from your early childhood education. But you made it through and learned some lessons along the way. While we might work a little slower or struggle without assistance, we will consistently achieve more than expected.
We Figure Things Out:
Dyslexia makes us incredible problem solvers, which is what any job is, just solving a company's problems. A layer deeper than that, dyslexics often become a source of knowledge in any position we hold because we NEED to know how things work (even if not in our department). We always seek out information.
So if you are a dyslexic writer out there for kids or adults, please stop trying to tell dyslexics that they will be good or bad at specific jobs. If you are just a dyslexic trying to figure out what you want to do with your life, the answer is... anything. Start by looking at what you enjoy the most and learning about jobs that tie to that skill set. Lean into your dyslexic strengths and know that there will be struggles.
